Your participation in the interactive workshop sessions (Nov 30th and Dec 1st) will give you this opportunity. Some of the issues that will be brought up in the respective sessions are:
Advocacy and Empowerment
- principles and Practice
- role of self-help groups in advocating their rights
- how can persons with disabilities be empowered
- participation and contribution of persons with disabilities to nation-building
- concepts and approaches required in meeting the needs of persons with disabilities
- public accountability in work for persons with disabilities
- values for change in the life of persons with disabilities
Access to the Built Environment
- lack of access in public buildings, such as institutional buildings, commercial, educational and recreational facilities
- lack of access in the external built environment, such as transportation modes, walkways and open spaces
- legislative aspects of Access In The Built Environment
- practices and experiences from people from other countries that have done a lot in the area of access and mobility for the disabled
Community-based Rehabilitation
- address the elements in CBR
- compare and contrast them with those of the medical treatment model such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy etc.
- To demystify the concept of direct dependence upon medical and rehabilitation professionals in CBR and to advocate decision making and active participation by persons with disabilities, their families and ordinary local citizens in CBR programmes
- including specific disability issues into existing mainstream programmes especially health, social, transport, housing, human resource and economy
Appropriate technology
- Examine existing supply of assistive devices in rural and urban communities in the region
- Encourage the designing and production of assistive devices that are socially acceptable and affordable by the respective local communities
- Form and maintain a support group of designers and producers of appropriate technology at varying levels of communities in each country and at the national level, in order to exchange information and technology on the latest developments in the respective countries
